Inside the PAN U19: Performance starts before you enter the pool

The matches are what everyone sees.

The preparation behind them is not.

From the PAN U19 in Bauru, Brazil, the first episode of YARE Performance | Before the Water takes us into that less visible side of the game.

Diego Helps Magalhães, physiotherapist working within Brazil’s national water polo environment, demonstrates a pre training routine focused on preparing the shoulders, neck and upper body for the physical demands of water polo.

Before the first whistle

Long before the first sprint, pass or shot, the body has already started preparing for competition.

Water polo places repeated demands on the shoulders and upper body through swimming, passing, shooting, blocking and physical contact.

That makes what happens before entering the water part of the performance itself.

The movements demonstrated by Magalhães in Bauru are simple and purposeful, designed to prepare the athlete for the work that follows in the pool.

Simple movements. Specific purpose.

Performance starts before you enter the pool.

Behind the competition

A tournament is more than the games we eventually see on the scoreboard.

Behind every performance there are warm ups, preparation routines, recovery sessions and professionals working with athletes throughout the competition.

That is the side of water polo YARE Performance wants to bring closer to the audience.

Not only what happens during the game.

What makes the game possible.

From Bauru to YARE

With Before the Water, YARE opens a new window into performance and the people working behind it.

Through Diego Helps Magalhães and direct content from Brazil, we will explore preparation, prevention, recovery and some of the details surrounding high performance water polo that rarely reach the public.

And there could hardly be a better place to begin than inside an international youth competition.
