GREECE | Water Polo League 2: 16 Teams, a Final 8 and a New Battle for Survival
Sixteen clubs, two geographical groups, 14 regular-season matches and a decisive final phase that will determine promotion and relegation. The Hellenic Swimming Federation has published the regulations for the 2026/27 Water Polo League 2 season, introducing a revised relegation format and setting the stage for another competitive year in Greek men's water polo.
Greece's second-tier men's water polo championship is preparing for a season in which the regular-season standings will matter enormously, but will not tell the whole story.
On October 7, 2026, the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) published the official competition regulations and schedule for Water Polo League 2.
The championship will feature 16 teams divided into two groups of eight, with the regular season followed by separate promotion and relegation phases in April 2027.
The most interesting question is not simply who finishes first.
It is who can turn a strong regular season into promotion, and who can deliver when their place in the division is on the line.

The final lineup was confirmed following September's revised draw and the publication of the official competition regulations.

The geographical spread of the participating clubs highlights the national character of the competition.
From Athens and Crete to Chios, Thessaly, Thessaloniki, Corfu, western Greece and Thrace, Water Polo League 2 brings together clubs representing very different water polo communities.
For many of them, the competition is about much more than promotion. It is also an opportunity to develop players, build competitive consistency and strengthen their place within Greek water polo.
Fourteen Matches Before the First Major Decisions
The regular season will be played in a double round-robin format.
Each team will face the other seven clubs in its group twice, once at home and once away.
That means 14 matches per team before the final group standings are established.
The opening round is scheduled for November 21 and 22, 2026, while the regular season will conclude on April 11, 2027.
From that point, teams will follow different paths depending on their finishing positions.
The top four clubs in each group will qualify for the Final 8.
The teams finishing seventh and eighth will enter the relegation play outs.
For the clubs finishing fifth and sixth, the season will end with the regular phase.
Final 8: Eight Teams, Two Promotion Places
The promotion phase will bring together the eight highest-ranked teams from the regular season.
The top four from the Southern Group and the top four from the Northern Group will compete in knockout matches, with quarterfinal pairings determined by their final group positions.
The group winners will face the fourth-placed teams from the opposite group, while second-placed teams will meet third-placed opponents.
The winners will advance to the semifinals.
The two teams reaching the final will secure promotion to Greece's top division, the Water Polo League.
The Final 8 is provisionally scheduled for April 23 to 25, 2027, at a neutral venue.
For clubs targeting promotion, the regular season is therefore only the first part of the challenge.
Consistency over 14 matches must be followed by the ability to perform under knockout pressure.
A strong group finish can provide a better starting position. It cannot guarantee promotion.
Relegation Play Outs: Survival Will Be Decided in the Pool
At the opposite end of the standings, the new regulations introduce an important element to the relegation battle.
The teams finishing seventh and eighth in each group will enter a combined play out tournament.
All four clubs will face one another in a single round-robin competition at a neutral venue.
The tournament will consist of three rounds and six matches in total.
At its conclusion, the bottom two teams will be relegated to National Division 1.
This represents a meaningful change in how survival will be decided.
Finishing eighth in the regular season will no longer mean automatic relegation. Those teams will still have an opportunity to retain their place in the division.
Equally, finishing seventh will not guarantee safety.
The system places considerable importance on a short, high-pressure tournament in which every result could change the final standings.
For the teams involved, the ability to manage pressure, recover between matches and remain disciplined could prove decisive.
Opening Weekend: November 21 and 22
The first round will feature eight matches across the two groups.
Southern Group
Saturday, November 21
GS Ilioupolis vs PEKEV
Sunday, November 22

The opening weekend marks the beginning of a campaign that will run for almost five months before the decisive promotion and relegation matches.

The YARE Perspective: More Than a Promotion Race
Water Polo League 2 is not simply the competition that offers a route into Greece's top division.
It is an important part of the country's water polo structure, bringing together clubs from different regions and giving players opportunities to gain experience, earn playing time and take on greater responsibilities.
The new format creates two parallel stories.
At the top, eight teams will attempt to transform their Final 8 qualification into promotion.
At the bottom, four clubs will fight to preserve their place in the division.
Between those two battles are 14 regular-season matches that will shape the competitive landscape.
But there is another story worth following.
The development of the players themselves.
Over the course of a demanding season, consistency, adaptability, decision-making under pressure and the emergence of younger athletes can be just as compelling as the final league table.
YARE will follow Water Polo League 2 not only through results, but also through the clubs, players and individual journeys that deserve greater international visibility.
Because the next generation of Greek water polo is not developing exclusively in the top division.
