CYPRUS WATER POLO | MORE THAN A COMEBACK

Eight clubs, a historic return and a new chapter for Cypriot water polo

Twenty-one years after its last appearance, Kyrenia Nautical Club is returning to the Cyprus National Water Polo Championship.

The 2026/27 season begins on 14 November with eight participating clubs, a defending champion determined to retain its titles and challengers hoping to reshape the competition.

Kyrenia's return is the headline. But the bigger story is what this new season could mean for the future of water polo in Cyprus.

EIGHT CLUBS. ONE CHAMPIONSHIP.

The 27th ALLWYN Cyprus National Water Polo Championship will feature eight clubs.

The participating teams are APOEL, Nicosia Nautical Club, Limassol Nautical Club, Larnaca Nautical Club, Paphos Nautical Club, Mesa Geitonia Nautical Club, Famagusta Nautical Club and Kyrenia Nautical Club.

The regular season will consist of two rounds, with seven matchdays in each.

APOEL enter the new campaign as defending league and cup champions, aiming to maintain their position at the top of Cypriot water polo.

Larnaca and Limassol have also strengthened their squads and are preparing to challenge for the championship.

The first major fixture of the season is scheduled for 13 November, when APOEL face Larnaca in the Super Cup.

KYRENIA RETURNS TO THE WATER

Kyrenia Nautical Club's return represents far more than another name on the championship schedule.

The historic displaced club is returning to national competition for the first time since 2005, ending a 21-year absence.

The team will play its home matches at the Larnaca Olympic Swimming Pool.

Its comeback carries historical significance, but it also raises important sporting questions.

How does a club rebuild a competitive water polo programme after more than two decades away from the national championship?

Who will form the squad?

And what foundations will the club establish to ensure its return becomes a sustainable sporting project?

These questions will become increasingly important as the opening match approaches.

THE TITLE RACE

APOEL begin the season as holders of both domestic titles.

According to the Cyprus Swimming Federation's announcement, Denes Andor Varga returns to the club after spending the previous season with Apollo Tbilisi.

Meanwhile, Larnaca and Limassol have made moves to strengthen their squads, with the ambition of becoming more competitive.

Whether these changes will significantly affect the championship hierarchy remains to be seen.

For YARE, the title race offers an opportunity to look beyond the standings.

Defensive organisation, extra-player efficiency, goalkeeper performance and the ability to maintain consistency across the season will all be important areas of analysis.

THE NEXT GENERATION QUESTION

Eight participating clubs provide a broader competitive framework.

But does a larger championship automatically mean more opportunities for young players?

Not necessarily.

The development of a sport cannot be measured solely by the number of clubs participating in its senior competition.

It also depends on access to structured training, the strength of age-group programmes and the opportunities available for young athletes to progress into senior water polo.

How many emerging players will be included in this season's squads?

How many will receive meaningful playing time?

And which clubs are building sustainable pathways from youth development to senior competition?

These are questions worth following throughout the season.

THE YARE WATCH | BEYOND THE RESULTS

The 2026/27 campaign offers an opportunity to examine Cypriot water polo in greater depth.

YARE will focus on club development, emerging players and performance indicators that are not always reflected in the final score.

Goalkeeper impact, centre-back defensive performance, extra-player efficiency and the contributions of younger athletes will be important areas of observation.

Where official statistics are available, they will provide the foundation for further analysis.

The objective is not simply to identify who wins, but to understand how teams develop and which players are helping shape the competition.

MORE THAN A COMEBACK

Kyrenia's return gives the new season a distinctive historical dimension.

Eight participating clubs, ambitious challengers and renewed competition create an interesting starting point for the championship.

But the real measure of progress will emerge over time.

It will be reflected in the stability of the clubs, the quality of competition and, above all, the opportunities created for the next generation.

The new season begins with a historic return.

What happens next will be written in the water.

Eight clubs. A historic return. A new chapter for Cyprus water polo.
