NETHERLANDS U18 | One Club, Two Different Stories at the Top
GZC DONK lost to ZV De Zaan in the boys' competition but maintained its perfect record in the girls' league. Two results from the same weekend reveal contrasting early-season dynamics in Dutch U18 water polo.
GZC DONK experienced two very different sides of competition over the weekend of October 10โ11.
In the boys' U18 championship, the Gouda club hosted ZV De Zaan and suffered an 18โ15 defeat. In the girls' competition, its first team defeated Polar Bears 17โ10 to maintain a perfect record.
The contrast offers an interesting perspective on the opening weeks of the Dutch season. In one competition, DONK is chasing the leaders. In the other, it is setting the pace.
ZV De Zaan: An Away Win That Matters
ZV De Zaan's 18โ15 victory at GZC DONK was one of the standout results in the boys' U18 Eredivisie A.
It took De Zaan to four wins from four matches and 12 points, with 87 goals scored and 54 conceded.
The importance of the result goes beyond preserving an unbeaten record. DONK is among the teams competing near the top of the standings, making this an important head-to-head victory for De Zaan.
After four rounds, PSV, GZC DONK and ZPB H&L Productions sit three points behind, each with nine points.
De Zaan has established an early advantage, although four matches are not enough to draw firm conclusions about the season's eventual outcome.
GZC DONK: 88 Goals Scored, Just 22 Conceded
The situation is different in the girls' U18 competition.
GZC DONK defeated Polar Bears 17โ10 to complete the fourth round with four wins, 12 points and a goal difference of +66.
Its attacking output stands at 88 goals, but the more revealing number may be the 22 goals conceded.
That represents an average of just 5.5 goals against per match, an early-season figure worth monitoring as the level of opposition changes.
De Ham sits second with 10 points following a 19โ16 away victory over UZSC. Polar Bears and ZVL-1886 follow on nine points.
Despite DONK's strong start, the points gap at the top remains relatively small.
Beyond the Leaders: Results From Round Four
In the boys' competition, Polar Bears defeated Het Ravijn 20โ14, BZ&PC beat SCOM/De Zeehond'73 17โ5, and ZVVS recorded a 12โ5 away victory over SVH.
Among the girls, De Ham defeated UZSC 19โ16, ZVL-1886 beat ZPB H&L Productions 11โ8, and ZPC Amersfoort secured a 15โ3 win over SVH/Z&PC Rotterdam. PSV also defeated GZC DONK's second team 22โ11.
The variation in winning margins suggests that the competitive balance differs considerably between individual fixtures.
For that reason, the leaders' aggregate statistics should be assessed alongside the strength of their opponents rather than treated as definitive evidence of superiority.
What Should We Watch Next?
For ZV De Zaan, the main question is whether it can maintain its advantage against the teams immediately behind it in the standings.
For GZC DONK's girls, defensive consistency deserves particular attention. Conceding only 22 goals in four matches provides a measurable benchmark for the weeks ahead.
The next stage of YARE's analysis will depend on the availability of detailed official match records.
Which players are responsible for the scoring? How evenly is offensive production distributed? What can individual match data reveal about special-situation efficiency?
Until those figures can be independently verified, the team results and standings remain the strongest available evidence.
The Dutch U18 season is still in its opening stages, but its two unbeaten leaders have already given us compelling reasons to follow what happens next.
