NELI JANKOVIĆ | SIX OUT OF TEN

Her participation was uncertain. Two days later, she scored 60% of her team's goals. At just 17, the Croatian international is showing how quickly a young prospect can become a decisive presence in senior women's water polo.

On October 29, Jadran Split coach Vinko Rossi spoke about a player who had travelled to Novi Sad but was unlikely to compete.

Neli Janković was dealing with an injury, and the priority was her full recovery.

On October 31, her name was at the top of the scoresheet.

Six goals against Vojvodina. Ten for Jadran. A 10–6 victory.

It was more than an impressive individual performance.

It was another chapter in the rapid development of a player who, at 17, has already taken on important responsibilities at both international and senior club level.

From uncertainty to a decisive performance

Jadran travelled to Serbia knowing the challenge ahead would be difficult.

Marseille had strengthened significantly and entered the group as favourites.

Their opening 19–5 victory over Jadran confirmed the scale of that challenge.

The following match against Vojvodina therefore carried a different significance.

Jadran needed a victory to secure second place and improve their position for the next stage of European competition.

Janković was available.

And her contribution was anything but limited.

Six goals, one important victory

The Croatian teenager scored Jadran's opening two goals, giving her team an early 2–0 lead.

Vojvodina briefly equalised, but Jadran regained control and finished the first quarter ahead 4–2.

At halftime, the visitors led 7–4.

The Serbian champions reduced the deficit to 7–5 in the third period, but Jadran maintained their advantage and eventually secured a 10–6 win.

Janković scored six of her team's ten goals.

Four other Jadran players contributed one goal each.

One player accounted for 60% of the team's attacking output.

What does 60% really mean?

The statistic is remarkable, but it also raises questions about the structure of an attack.

When one player contributes such a large share of the scoring, her individual influence is undeniable.

At the same time, the distribution of attacking responsibility becomes an important consideration.

How effectively can a defence adjust when it knows the primary scoring threat?

How many opportunities result from individual initiative, and how many from collective movement?

The official match records confirm the six goals, but they do not provide enough information to calculate her shooting efficiency or make detailed tactical claims without video analysis.

The more interesting question is how a team can maximise the value of an outstanding scorer without becoming dependent on a single player.

Seventeen, but already experienced

Born on August 12, 2009, Neli Janković has already developed a notable competitive record.

In November 2025, Jadran won the Croatian Cup with a 12–11 victory over Mladost.

Janković scored five goals in the final and received the Most Valuable Player award.

She was subsequently selected for Croatia's squad at the 2026 Women's European Championship.

Her emergence in European club competition is therefore not an isolated breakthrough.

It is part of a developing pattern of performances at increasingly demanding levels.

From youth development to senior responsibility

Janković's story is particularly relevant to YARE.

In women's water polo, talented teenagers can find themselves assuming substantial responsibilities in senior competitions while still progressing through their developmental years.

These opportunities provide invaluable experience.

They also introduce greater physical and competitive demands.

Managing playing time, recovery and long-term development is essential.

The uncertainty surrounding Janković's availability before the tournament is a reminder that an athlete's progress cannot be measured through scoring figures alone.

The conditions in which those performances are produced matter too.

The precise nature of her injury and the medical circumstances of her participation have not been publicly established in the sources reviewed, so no conclusion about her readiness to play can responsibly be drawn.

The European campaign continues

Jadran finished second in their qualifying group.

Marseille secured first place and the Euro Cup group-stage ticket with victories of 19–5 against Jadran and 18–4 against Vojvodina.

The Croatian club will continue its European campaign in the Conference Cup.

Janković's six goals did not change the group's eventual winner.

But they highlighted a player already capable of influencing meaningful European matches at senior level.

Beyond six goals

Six goals in one European match do not define an athlete's future.

Consistency, adaptation to different defensive systems, decision-making and physical wellbeing will all matter in the years ahead.

Neli Janković has already demonstrated that she can make an impact.

The next challenge is turning these individual performances into sustained contributions at the highest level.

Because the most interesting part of her story is not that she scored six goals. It is that she is only beginning to establish her place in European water polo.
