Marseille: The players behind the qualification
Bakoc, Vernoux and Marsh brought different names to the foreground of Marseille’s European start.
Qualification is the headline. The players who helped deliver it are a reason to spend a little longer with CN Marseille’s women.
Marseille opened their Euro Cup qualifying campaign with a 19:5 victory over Jadran Split. Canadian Olympian Verica Bakoc scored six, while French Olympian Ema Vernoux contributed four. Two players with experience on the biggest international stage provided an early reference point for the club’s European campaign.
An 18:4 win against Vojvodina then secured a place in the main group stage. This time, Luci Marsh scored four. The Australian is listed on the club’s official website as Lucinda Marsh, another name to keep in mind as the campaign develops.
Those different scoring contributions suggest an interesting question to follow: how will Marseille share attacking responsibility when matches become more demanding? Two results cannot answer that. They also provide too little evidence to explain the success through a particular tactical system.
For YARE, that is what makes the next stage worth watching. Following these players under greater pressure should tell us more than the margins of their opening victories. A possession, a decision or a missed opportunity can carry a very different weight in a close contest. Marseille have earned their place. How they use it is the next story.
